IBM's AI Pivot Fails to Impress, But Company Sees Rebound

IBM's second-quarter software shortfall was largely due to a sudden shift in customer spending from traditional areas of its portfolio to AI-focused hardware components, according to CEO Arvind Krishna. In an earnings call, Krishna explained that the company witnessed a 'shift in client spending priorities' during the end of June, with customers prioritizing servers, storage, and memory purchases ahead of expected price increases.

The shift led to IBM failing to close a double-digit number of large deals on the timelines it expected, accounting for most of the shortfall. However, Krishna claimed that about one-third of those shifted deals had since closed.

IBM's CFO James Kavanaugh further explained that the company's traditional software and infrastructure competencies were impacted by the shift, but that its recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, are driving high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.
