IBM's Computing Legacy: A Story of Repeated Disruption

The IBM computing legacy is a story of repeated disruption and transformation. From its humble beginnings in the 1890s, IBM has consistently destroyed its own best business before someone else did.

The company's first major innovation was the punch card tabulator, which enabled information to be held in a machine-readable form that survived any particular machine. This format outlived the machinery that created it by decades and established IBM as a leader in data processing.

In the 1950s, IBM entered the computer industry with the development of the 701, a vacuum tube-based computer that was used for scientific calculations. The company's entry into electronic computing was largely funded by the US Air Force, which paid for the development of the computers and drove IBM to innovate in areas such as magnetic core memory and long-distance data transmission.

The 650, introduced in 1953, became known as the workhorse of modern industry due to its ability to be programmed in high-level languages. This marked a significant shift towards commercial computing and established IBM as a major player in the industry.
