IBM's DS8000 Storage Platform Gets a Major Upgrade with FCM5 and Enhanced Security
IBM has released an updated version of its flagship enterprise storage platform, the DS8000. The new release, version 10.2, brings several improvements to the platform's performance and security. One of the key features of the update is the introduction of the fifth-generation FlashCore Module (FCM5), which offers improved airflow, lower thermal overhead, and integration with Active Energy Management (AEM) for real-time power and cooling observability.
The FCM5 is housed in a redesigned High-Performance Flash Enclosure (HPFE) Gen 3 E3, which uses the Enterprise and Datacenter Standard Form Factor (EDSFF). This new form factor provides improved airflow and lower thermal overhead compared to previous designs. The update also doubles back-end storage fabric throughput and IOPS using NVMe over PCIe Gen 4 connectivity.
The release targets large-scale enterprise demands by focusing on increased drive density, deeper operational telemetry, and automated cyber resilience. IBM says that the new features will benefit read-heavy, cache-unfriendly enterprise transaction workloads and large dataset processing.
