IBM's Execution Shortfall: A Shift Towards AI-Focused Spending
IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced an execution shortfall in its second quarter of fiscal 2026, leading to a software revenue shortfall. This was attributed to a sudden shift in customer spending towards AI-focused hardware components and cybersecurity software, which moved away from IBM's core software and infrastructure competencies.
The company witnessed a significant shift in client spending priorities at the end of June, with clients prioritizing servers, storage, and memory purchases to secure supply-constrained infrastructure ahead of expected price increases. This led to a delay in closing large deals on IBM's timelines, accounting for most of the shortfall.
Krishna stated that about one-third of the shifted deals had since closed, indicating that the delay was due to deferral rather than destruction. He expressed confidence in the company's business and growth prospects, citing its ability to adapt and innovate.
