IBM's Quantum Breakthrough Falls Flat as Fraud Probe Widens

IBM's achievement in linking two cryogenic modules into a single cooled environment has not translated to enthusiasm from investors. The company's shares took a hit after BTIG poured cold water on the excitement, underscoring how exacting investors have become when it comes to Big Blue's technological claims.

The legal cloud gathering over IBM is also a concern. BFA Law is widening its probe into possible securities fraud, examining whether the company kept investors in the dark about softening momentum in its Z-series mainframe business before the stock's brutal July sell-off.

IBM reported revenue of $17.16 billion, up just 1% year over year, and earnings per share of $2.93 in its quarterly report. Analysts had expected $17.46 billion on the top line. Chief executive Arvind Krishna tried to reassure investors that 40% of previously deferred deals had since closed, but BFA Law's investigation is looking into whether IBM had a fuller picture of the Z-series slowdown beforehand.

The stock remains caught between operational stabilization signals and the ongoing legal inquiry, with shares trading at €201.80 in German markets, roughly 31% below their 52-week high of €292.85.
