IBM's Stock Plunges Amid Mainframe Woes and Looming Lawsuit

IBM's stock has plummeted over the past month, losing nearly a quarter of its value since July. The decline began on July 14, when the company reported second-quarter results that fell short of expectations, with revenue from its flagship mainframe business coming in lower than anticipated.

The stock price has been in freefall ever since, shedding around 23.59 percent of its value over the past month and more than 27 percent year-to-date. At one point, shares were trading at 188.74 EUR, down from a June peak of 292.85 EUR.

The mainframe business, a crucial part of IBM's operations, has been struggling to meet expectations. Despite this, the company is pushing forward with its plans for quantum computing, which CEO Arvind Krishna believes will begin contributing significantly to revenue and profit by 2028 or 2029.

IBM is also making moves into the Indian market, partnering with Sarvam AI to develop sovereign AI solutions. The concept of sovereign AI aims to address data sovereignty concerns in regulated industries and governments. However, this move may not provide immediate relief for investors, as revenue from these efforts will take years to materialize.

The company is facing a legal cloud with the law firm BFA Law examining the possibility of filing a securities fraud lawsuit against IBM. The allegation is that the company misled investors about the health of its mainframe business and order pipeline.
