Idaho's Largest Butterfly House Attracts Thousands with Tropical Oasis

The Butterfly Haven in Idaho is a tropical oasis that's home to thousands of butterflies from over 27 species. The attraction, located at 1460 W. 200 South in Pingree, covers an impressive 8,000 square feet and features lush landscaping with flowers. Co-owner Susannah Newsome describes the site as her parents' 'hobby gone wild,' which has become a dream come true.

Founder Randy Reed has over 30 years of greenhouse experience and has been raising butterflies for nearly his entire life. He calls them 'caterpillar vultures' due to their voracious appetite, requiring him to feed them twice a day with plant material. The butterfly breeding stock is often sourced from other farmers through trade agreements.

The attraction offers a unique educational experience for visitors of all ages. Guests can walk among the butterflies and observe their life cycle, from eggs to caterpillars and chrysalis. The Butterfly Haven also features quails that wander freely and can be fed by visitors for 25 cents each. These birds have been raised by the Reeds since they were young.

The attraction has become a popular destination in Idaho, with over 9 years of operation under its belt. It's open from Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing for the winter months before reopening in April.
