Immune System Hacking Breakthroughs Bring New Hope for Vitiligo and Cancer Sufferers

Researchers have made significant breakthroughs in treating vitiligo and cancer by targeting the immune system's response to specific targets. The Emirates Drug Establishment approved a once-daily pill for non-segmental vitiligo, making it the first oral treatment licensed anywhere.

The pill works by addressing the signaling that drives the attack on pigment-producing cells. Vitiligo affects about one in every hundred people and has no cure, so this breakthrough is significant.

Merck and Moderna have also made a major discovery with their experimental cancer vaccine, which worked in a large late-stage trial for melanoma, a type of skin cancer. The vaccine carries the genetic fingerprint of the tumour cells back into the patient as instructions to find and remove them.

The results show that patients who received the vaccine plus an existing cancer drug delayed recurrence and reduced the chance of cancer spreading.
