Indian Authorities Bust Illicit Warehouse Falsifying Expiration Dates on Global Food Products

Indian authorities have cracked down on an illicit operation in Mumbai that was falsifying expiration dates and nutrition labels on food products from global companies such as PepsiCo, Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Unilever. The warehouse, run by Sadhana Enterprises, was found to be storing nearly $80,000 worth of goods including Lay's potato chips, Maggi noodles, and Knorr Mushroom Soup.

The authorities discovered that the warehouse staff were using chemicals to remove original expiration dates and labels, then printing new ones on packaging and cans. Some products had their dates removed entirely, while others had fake nutrition labels pasted over the originals.

Tukaram Mundhe, head of Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration, expressed shock at the scale of the operation, calling it 'organised activity' that has been done systematically.
