Indian authorities raided an illicit food export operation in Mumbai, uncovering a large-scale scam involving fake expiry dates and nutritional information on packaged goods. The warehouse, owned by Sadhana Enterprises, was found to be printing and applying new labels to products from major companies such as PepsiCo, Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Unilever.

The investigation revealed that the operation was systematic, with chemicals used to erase original expiry dates and ingredient labels, and machines to print replacement labels. At least 5,000 cartons of consumer products were seized, including Lay's potato chips, Maggi noodles, and Knorr Mushroom Soup.

Most of the products were expired or near-expired, and by changing their dates, 'harmful food products are being exported for sale, thereby defrauding customers,' according to a police case document. The warehouse was found to be printing labels in English and French, suggesting that the products were destined for export.

India's Maharashtra state has intensified its food safety drive under the new head of the state's Food and Drug Administration, Tukaram Mundhe, who called for supply chain accountability and compliance with regulations. The case highlights the need for stronger enforcement of food safety laws in India.
