IndiGo Suspends Long-Haul Operations Amid Rising Operating Costs and Geopolitical Tensions

IndiGo, India's largest airline, is temporarily suspending its long-haul international operations due to rising operating costs and geopolitical tensions. The airline has decided to end its leased Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner programme, which was introduced in early 2025.

The Boeing 787 programme allowed IndiGo to gain experience in operating long-haul flights before the arrival of its own Airbus A350-900 aircraft. However, global conditions have changed significantly over the past year, making it increasingly difficult for the airline to sustain the programme.

According to Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President, Planning and Revenue Management at IndiGo, 'the Boeing 787 programme was always intended as a bridge until our own wide-body aircraft entered service.'

The airline will continue to expand selected international routes using the Airbus A321XLR, which offers a more economical option for medium- to long-distance flights.
