Industry Leaders Unite Behind Call for Slowing Down AI Model Development
Demis Hassabis, co-founder and chair of Google DeepMind, has echoed Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call to slow down AI model development. This comes as top executives such as Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Rishi Sunak show their support for an industry-wide slowdown.
Amodei proposed a three-step plan to pace the frontier of AI development, including giving ongoing employee-like access to a team of embedded third-party evaluators. He emphasized that unchecked AI progress could outrun human ability to control systems.
Hassabis agreed with Amodei's direction, stating that while details need refining, 'the direction is correct for meeting this critical moment.'
Other industry leaders have also voiced concerns over the risks associated with AI development. A researcher at Anthropic recently quit the industry due to fears of building systems they won't be able to control.
