Ireland's Future Must Be Decided by Its People, Says Sinn Féin President

Mary Lou McDonald, President of Sinn Féin, believes that Ireland's future must be decided by its people. She emphasizes that this principle is not just an aspiration but is embedded in the Good Friday Agreement, which provides a clear and peaceful pathway to Irish reunification.

In a statement, McDonald notes that the conversation about Irish unity can no longer be dismissed as abstract or premature. She attributes this change in perspective to Ireland's transformation over the past quarter century, particularly with regards to relationships across the island and political assumptions.

McDonald argues that the Good Friday Agreement does not give the British Government a veto over Ireland's constitutional future but rather provides for the people of the island to make that choice democratically. She emphasizes the importance of preparation in this process, including examining public services, taxation, pensions, healthcare, education, identity, rights, and constitutional structures.

McDonald stresses that Irish unity is not just about moving a border but about building something better, an all-island health service, strengthening the economy, deepening north-south trade and investment, and ensuring communities left behind can share in prosperity.
