IREN Clears Microsoft Delivery Milestone, but Execution Risks Remain
IREN Limited has achieved a significant milestone in its $9.7 billion AI agreement with Microsoft, as the tech giant accepted the first phase of the deployment, Horizon 1. This marks a major proof point for IREN's efforts to convert the five-year contract into operating infrastructure.
The acceptance of Horizon 1, a 50 MW deployment at IREN's Childress campus, was completed in August and brings the initial phase in line with IREN's 2026 deployment plan. The company had previously targeted a third-quarter calendar 2026 handoff for Horizon 1.
NVIDIA has also awarded IREN Exemplar Cloud status after testing the GB300 NVL72 deployment at Horizon 1, indicating that the system met NVIDIA's standards for performance, reliability, and scale. This technical validation adds credibility to IREN as it expands its AI Cloud Services business.
However, IREN still has three remaining Microsoft phases scheduled for delivery in 2026, which will determine how quickly more of the agreement becomes revenue-generating capacity. The company's estimates suggest that about 95% of Microsoft GPU-related capital expenditure will be funded through customer prepayments and GPU financing.
The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and has a Growth Score of B, while its Value Score, Momentum Score, and VGM Score show less favorable readings. IREN's Contract Economics Could Support the Buildout, according to the article, which also mentions CoreWeave, Inc. CRWV as a useful industry context.
