ISU's Jason Alvine Finds Balance in Broadcasting and Home Depot
Jason Alvine has been broadcasting college sports for over two decades. He started by calling high school football games and eventually moved on to college sports at Northern Colorado, Idaho State, and Montana State. After a stint as the director of operations for Tricia Binford's Montana State women's basketball program, he returned to Idaho State in 2020 to call football and men's basketball. Alvine will now be the radio voice of ISU volleyball, women's basketball, and softball.
Alvine has had a winding career path, but it all started when he was called on to broadcast high school football games as a junior at Northern Colorado. He then worked in local television and radio markets, broadcasting high school football among other assignments. In 2009, his alma mater gave him the opportunity to broadcast Northern Colorado women's basketball.
Alvine's experience coaching on Seton Sobolewski's staff at Idaho State has prepared him well for his new role as the voice of the Bengals' women's basketball team. He knows how special the ISU women's program is, having not only coached here but also been on the other side of the competition while broadcasting the 2012 Big Sky Conference championship game in Reed Gym.
When asked about the parallels between Idaho State and Montana State's athletic programs, Alvine attributed it to the leadership of Pauline Thiros and her vision for taking the program to the next level. Like many small-market broadcasters, Alvine has to have another source of income outside his radio and television work, which he finds at Home Depot, where he works five days a week.
