Jackson County Woods Fire Spreads to 200 Acres, Evacuations Underway
A woods fire in East Jackson County is growing in size and has prompted evacuations in the area, according to local authorities. The fire began on Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m. and has now spread to an estimated 200 acres.
The Orange Grove RV Park south of Highway 90 and some scattered homes between Chevron Road and Bayou Heron Road are being evacuated as a precautionary measure, said Earl Etheridge, director of the Jackson County Office of Emergency Services (OES). The Mississippi Forestry Commission is assisting in the containment effort.
The smoke from the fire may be causing visibility issues on Interstate 10, with drivers advised to use caution when traveling through the area. A Facebook post by the Jackson County OES warned residents to remain alert and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
