Jamie Dimon Sounds Alarm on Record Market Leverage
JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has issued a warning about excessive market leverage, stating that it's at its highest point ever.
In an interview with CNBC, Dimon noted that margin debt is soaring, and investors are using debt to amplify their gains. However, this can also lead to significant losses when the market downturns.
Dimon pointed out that the recent sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks has highlighted the dangers of excessive leverage. The hedge fund Situational Awareness, run by 25-year-old Leopold Aschenbrenner, was forced to sell AI stocks at a discount to meet multiple margin calls.
A team of JPMorgan strategists led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou noted that recent data shows a 10% loss for tech, media, and telecommunications funds in July. This could limit the capacity of these funds to hold tech exposures going forward, making retail investors more influential in the AI trade.
