Jes Staley Confirms Links to Epstein, Denies Knowing About Crimes
Jes Staley, former CEO of Barclays and executive at JPMorgan Chase, has been linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a transcript released by the House Oversight Committee. The investigation into Epstein's associates is ongoing.
Staley admitted to visiting Epstein's private island three times but downplayed his involvement with the financier, stating that he 'regretted' their association and didn't know about Epstein's criminal conduct involving minors. He also acknowledged a personal relationship with one of Epstein's assistants, claiming that it wasn't facilitated by Epstein.
The transcript shows Staley sharing confidential information with Epstein during the 2008 financial crisis, including $44 billion in private bank inflows and pending deals not publicly known at the time. Staley justified this by saying he was using Epstein as a source of advice on market views.
Staley also admitted to personally informing Epstein that JPMorgan had designated him as a 'high-risk client' due to large cash withdrawals, but acknowledged that Epstein had generated over $100 million for the bank. He further confirmed his involvement with the Epstein estate after Epstein's guilty plea in 2008.
