Jets' Position Battles Take Shape as Training Camp Enters Final Week
The New York Jets are heading into their final week of training camp, and position battles are beginning to take shape. One notable battle is at safety between Andre Cisco and Dane Belton. While Cisco has made some impressive plays, including an interception in the team's latest preseason game, Belton seems to be firmly in command of winning the starting job opposite Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Belton was signed as a free agent after a breakout performance last year with the Giants, and his physicality, tackling ability, and improved coverage skills have caught the Jets' eye. Cisco's role may be better suited as a third safety in the defense rather than an every-down starter.
The kicker position battle between Cade York and Jason Sanders is another closely watched contest. While Sanders made his lone kick on Friday and has been consistent over the last week of practice, York has struggled with several misses, including a difficult 59-yard attempt. If York cannot turn things around, it seems more likely that Sanders will win the job.
In the cornerback battle, AZ Thomas appears to be ahead of Nahshon Wright due in part to Wright's recent injury. However, Thomas' lack of speed and aggressive playing style may hinder his overall performance. Meanwhile, Omar Cooper Jr. has taken a step forward in the WR3 battle with Isaiah Williams, who was initially favored for the spot.
The Jets still have one preseason game left to play, but these position battles are beginning to take shape. While things can change over the next few weeks, it seems that Belton and Sanders are currently the frontrunners in their respective battles.
