Jimenez's Breathtaking Comeback Falls Short at Boeing Classic
Miguel Ángel Jiménez produced an extraordinary closing nine on Sunday in the final round of the Boeing Classic, carding a 28-stroke masterpiece with eight birdies and six consecutive birdies from hole 13 to 18. The Spaniard's 64 for the round put him at -12 on the clubhouse leaderboard, which would have secured his eighth victory on the PGA Tour Champions if not for Stewart Cink.
Jiménez had started the final day in 15th place, five shots off the lead held by Steven Alker. After two rounds of 70, he looked too far away from victory. However, he turned the back nine into a practice course, making birdie on eight of the nine holes and strung together six in a row to finish.
The playoff returned to the 18th hole, where Cink made par after sending his tee shot into the bunker, while Jiménez found the centre of the fairway but struggled with his second shot, finishing in the rough beyond the green. The recovery from there was extremely difficult, and he could only make par.
