JP Morgan Targets US Housing Shortage with $750 Billion Commitment
JPMorgan Chase & Co. is making a significant commitment to addressing the US housing shortage by investing $750 billion in the next decade, nearly 40% more than its investment over the past ten years.
This pledge is part of the bank's 'American Dream Initiative,' which aims to expand economic opportunity across six focus areas, including housing, small businesses, and financial health. The initiative plans to finance the construction or preservation of 1 million affordable housing units and help 500,000 consumers buy homes.
JPMorgan will deploy a range of financing tools, including debt, equity, and grants, as well as partner with other industry players to achieve its goals. In addition, the bank will advocate for 'pro-growth housing policies' by joining the US Chamber of Commerce's Housing Advisory Council as chair.
The firm's commercial real estate exposure has been dominated by multifamily lending, accounting for more than half of its total exposure at the end of the first quarter. To further increase its residential mortgage business, JPMorgan plans to hire 850 home-lending advisers and seek a more than 45% increase in residential mortgage business.
