JPMorgan Chase Puts Big Bet on Reviving San Francisco
JPMorgan Chase chief Jamie Dimon has made a significant investment in San Francisco's housing market, pledging $200 million to fund a 342-unit waterfront housing project. This move is part of the bank's nationwide effort to increase housing supply, with a target of building one million affordable units by 2035.
The investment comes as San Francisco's economy and public safety are experiencing a resurgence. Mayor Daniel Lurie's initiatives have led to a 25% drop in overall crime rates since 2025, with violent crime decreasing by 18% and property crime plummeting by 27%. However, the city still struggles with high rent prices, which Dimon acknowledged as a major issue.
Dimon praised Lurie's efforts, saying he has been 'doing all the right stuff.' The bank's new corporate center in San Francisco will create more jobs and help alleviate housing supply issues. With this investment, JPMorgan Chase is joining other major firms like OpenAI and Anthropic, which have also set up shop in the city.
