JPMorgan Considers Stablecoin as Banking Sector Shifts on Digital Currencies
JPMorgan Chase is considering launching its own stablecoin, marking a significant shift in the banking sector's stance on digital currencies. Major financial institutions have traditionally favored tokenized deposits as a more controlled alternative to stablecoins, but this position is becoming less rigid.
According to a report, JPMorgan already operates JPM Coin, a tokenized deposit system, and maintains its own blockchain infrastructure. The bank has indicated that it does not currently have plans to issue a stablecoin, but could reconsider depending on customer demand and changes to the regulatory environment.
A group of over a dozen financial institutions, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Santander, is advancing plans for a joint stablecoin project. The initiative will initially focus on a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin, with potential expansion to other major currencies like the euro.
