JPMorgan Cuts Off Leopold Aschenbrenner's Hedge Fund After Record-Breaking Loss
JPMorgan Chase has cut off its lending relationship with Leopold Aschenbrenner's hedge fund, Situational Awareness, after record-breaking losses in AI stocks. The fund's July sell-off resulted in a 67% loss of assets, making it the largest dollar loss in hedge fund history.
The decision by JPMorgan highlights the growing concern among institutional lenders about aggressive AI-focused trading strategies that have driven significant returns but also led to substantial losses. Aschenbrenner's fund had managed to recover slightly after offloading its public market positions, but the loss of leverage from JPMorgan has put a strain on its operations.
To rebuild his portfolio, Aschenbrenner has turned to boutique Prime Broker Clear Street and is deploying customized 'flex options' on semiconductor manufacturers like AMD, Intel, SK Hynix, and SanDisk. These derivatives enable the fund to maintain directional bets across the technology supply chain while capping potential downside.
