JPMorgan Cuts Ties with AI Hedge Fund After Steep Losses

JPMorgan Chase abruptly ended its lending relationship with Situational Awareness, a hedge fund focused on artificial intelligence (AI), after significant losses tied to AI bets nearly led to a collapse. The fund's founder, Leopold Aschenbrenner, had gained prominence for his bold predictions about the AI ecosystem.

Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, launched Situational Awareness in 2024 and initially achieved impressive returns through his bets on companies related to AI. However, when a global chip-stock rout exposed his leveraged positions, the fund suffered substantial losses.

The losses prompted JPMorgan to sever ties with the hedge fund. The bank reportedly notified Aschenbrenner that it would end its lending relationship. Other Wall Street banks, including Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, remain active brokers for Situational Awareness.
