JPMorgan Eyes Stablecoin as US Banks Revisit Blockchain Payments
JPMorgan Chase is considering issuing its own stablecoin, according to a recent report by The Wall Street Journal. This move comes as US banks are taking a closer look at blockchain-based payment systems. JPMorgan already operates JPM Coin, a tokenized deposit system built for institutional payments.
The bank has no active stablecoin product in development and has previously questioned the need for stablecoins given its existing infrastructure. However, a bank spokeswoman left open the possibility of reconsidering this decision, citing customer demand and regulatory changes as key factors.
Other banks are working on separate stablecoin initiatives, with more than a dozen financial institutions reportedly participating in a project focused initially on the US dollar and commercial applications.
