JPMorgan Pledges $750B to U.S. Housing Over Next Decade
JPMorgan Chase has pledged to invest $750 billion in U.S. housing over the next decade, aiming to address the country's severe housing shortage and rising mortgage rates. According to CEO Jamie Dimon, this plan extends the bank's American Dream Initiative, which includes six components: housing, small businesses, and financial health.
The plan targets backing the creation or rehabilitation of one million affordable homes, helping half a million consumers become homeowners, and increasing home-loan volume by more than 45%. JPMorgan will use a mix of lending, equity, and grants to achieve this goal, collaborating with other market participants. Michelle Herrick, who leads JPMorgan's commercial real estate business, noted that 'solving housing is complex,' requiring coordination among all constituents.
The bank currently leads its banking peers in home loan originations and multifamily lending represents more than half of its commercial real estate portfolio. By adding explicit targets for affordable housing, the announcement gives investors and policymakers a way to measure JPMorgan's progress over the decade.
