JPMorgan Sounds Warning Bell: AI Stocks' Conviction Fades as Seasonal Patterns Turn Unfavorable

Despite major indexes remaining near recent highs, JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s technical strategist Jason Hunter warns that the rally's foundation is less secure than it seems. A multi-week pullback has interrupted a string of weekly advances, and Hunter argues that surface-level index strength is masking a shift in market internals and leadership.

The trigger for this potential downturn, according to JPMorgan, is not economic data but rather the slow unraveling of conviction in artificial intelligence stocks. This trade has powered much of this year's gains, but its unraveling coincides with historically unfavorable seasonal patterns.

Hunter notes that while nothing looks broken on the surface, with major indexes remaining in a bullish trend, positioning has shifted inside the market, and certain groups are leading it. The assets that tend to turn first are behaving erratically, resembling a topping process rather than a healthy pause.

JPMorgan's warning is also based on a historical parallel: the run-up to 2000, when tech stocks surged for years before collapsing and dragging the market into a prolonged downturn. Similar doubts about payback in late-stage communications equipment buildouts then are being echoed today with AI infrastructure spending.
