JPMorgan Tests Blockchain for Japan's Government Bond Market
JPMorgan is testing blockchain technology to modernize the Japanese government bond market. The plan is to use distributed ledger infrastructure for real-time execution and settlement of JGB trades, potentially reducing the time required to complete transactions from one to three business days to near instantaneous.
The trial will focus on processing JGB transactions using blockchain technology. This could enable continuous settlement capabilities outside traditional banking hours, including nights and weekends.
JPMorgan also sees potential applications for blockchain in repurchase agreements (repos), which are widely used in financial markets for short-term borrowing and lending. Faster settlement could reduce the amount of time collateral remains tied up and potentially improve liquidity management for financial institutions.
