Judge Shoots Down Google Workspace Fee Lawsuit
A federal judge has dismissed a class-action lawsuit against Google over its decision to charge for Workspace services, ruling that commercial users were not entitled to free access to the platform.
The lawsuit was filed in 2023 by Steve Rabin and other 'legacy users' who claimed that Google breached its contract with them by transitioning away from a standard edition of Google Apps and G Suite.
The court found that Google's terms of service allowed the company to modify or suspend the Premium Edition, even if it meant charging customers for Workspace services.
The judge noted that California law requires contractual clauses limiting liability to be narrowly interpreted, and that Google's limitation of liability did not apply to all business-productivity tools.
