Jysk's Boring Mattress Ad Campaign Breaks the Mold with Humor
Jysk, a global retailer with Scandinavian roots and over 3,600 stores in 49 countries, faced a challenge in marketing their mattresses. Thomas Greve Jespersen, head of brand at Jysk, admitted that shopping for a mattress is often a 'dull and complicated chore' that consumers want to avoid.
The team turned to Google search data to understand the consumer mindset and found that the biggest hurdle wasn't cost, but complexity. People were overwhelmed by technical jargon and gave up before comparing options.
Instead of creating an informative ad featuring a 'chief mattress engineer', Jysk decided to focus on making the complexity of mattress shopping easy and entertaining. They used Google's ABCDs of video creativity framework to guide their approach, which stands for Attention, Branding, Connection, and Direction.
The campaign, developed with agency Pong, featured a character who was 'passionately, unapologetically tedious' about mattress specs. By openly acknowledging the elephant in the room, they immediately captured attention.
For Branding and Connection, Jysk wove brand cues into the ad, featuring store staff uniforms, logos on boxes, and consistently using their brand color to build a subconscious link with consumers. The emotional connection of humor also helped to retain viewers' attention.
