K-12 Schools Struggle to Keep Pace with Rapid AI Adoption

IBM has released new research on AI readiness in K-12 schools, revealing that educators and parents are struggling to keep pace with the rapid adoption of AI in classrooms. The survey, conducted among over 2,000 K-12 educators and parents, found that while 76% of middle school and 73% of high school classroom educators report using AI at least weekly, only 20% have received extensive AI training.

The research also showed that a significant gap exists between the speed at which AI is entering classrooms and the preparedness of schools to manage it. This has led IBM to launch the K-12 AI Leaders Fellowship, a professional learning initiative designed for K-12 superintendents, education leaders, and educators.

The fellowship aims to equip school leaders with practical knowledge and tools to guide responsible AI adoption, support educators, and strengthen engagement with parents. The inaugural cohort will launch this fall with up to 100 superintendents, education leaders, and educators from the greater New York area.
