Kathryn Strand Koutsky lived an extraordinary life, marked by her boundless energy and unrelenting pursuit of adventure. Born to Swedish-American parents in Minnesota, Kathryn grew up steeped in tradition but was determined to forge her own path.

At 18, she left home to work for Western Airlines in Los Angeles, where she later moved on to manage airline offices in Hawaii. She even learned to fly prop planes around the islands and lived largely off pineapple due to the meager pay. Returning to Minneapolis, Kathryn became a travel agent for American Express.

At 22, she embarked on an audacious journey, circumnavigating the globe through Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India in 1960, a remarkable feat for a young woman at that time. This was just the beginning of her numerous endeavors, which would span decades and leave an indelible mark on her community.

Kathryn married Dean Koutsky in 1960 and together they raised two independent daughters, Linda and Lisa, who were instilled with their mother's values of self-reliance and creativity. The family home was a testament to Kathryn's skills as an architect and designer, which she honed at the University of Minnesota under the guidance of renowned architect Ralph Rapson.

Kathryn went on to build a succession of businesses, including Village Studio, The Scroungers, Architectural Antiques, and Harmon Court Design Center. Her crowning achievement was transforming the century-old Munsingwear factory into International Market Square in 1985, a hub for the region's design and architecture industry.

Kathryn's adventurous spirit also extended to her personal life. She had a curator's eye for fine things, collecting art, antiques, postcards, menus, and curiosities that often inspired books co-authored with her daughter Linda. Her famously extravagant parties brought friends and family together, showcasing her warm hospitality and infectious energy.
