KB5121003 Windows Update Triggers Game Crashes and System Reboots
Microsoft's latest Windows 11 update, KB5121003, has been causing game crashes and unexpected system reboots for some users. The issue is reportedly linked to a third-party kernel driver called inpoutx64.sys that conflicts with changes introduced by the update.
The problem has affected players of ARC Raiders and The Finals, with users experiencing frequent crashes, GameThread hang errors, EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION messages, and sudden game crashes. Embark, the developer behind both games, has acknowledged the issue and linked it to KB5121003.
According to Embark, inpoutx64.sys appears to be the key factor in the crashes, not just ARC Raiders alone. The driver is used by some hardware utilities and other applications, but its presence causes compatibility problems with the update.
Embark recommends stopping and removing inpoutx64.sys from affected systems, which can prevent the crashes without requiring a complete uninstall of the driver. Users who have installed KB5121003 may want to check whether they have the driver on their system and remove it if necessary.
