Kenya Airways Bets Big on Boeing 737-800s for African Expansion
Kenya Airways is accelerating its fleet renewal and growth strategy, with the Boeing 737-800 emerging as the backbone of its regional expansion across Africa and key medium-haul routes.
The airline has been steadily rebuilding and enlarging its narrowbody fleet, with the 737-800 at its center. In February 2025, it added a 170-seat 737-800 on lease from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, lifting its total fleet to 35 aircraft and restoring capacity lost during earlier restructuring and pandemic-related cuts.
Kenya Airways has continued to bring aircraft back into service through 2025, including additional 737-800 and Embraer E190 units that had been grounded due to spare-parts shortages. The airline's fleet now consists of around 41 to 42 aircraft, with 737-800s making up a growing share of its short and medium-haul operation.
The 737-800 strategy is part of Kenya Airways' five-year, $400 million plan to expand its fleet from the mid-30s to more than 50 aircraft by the end of the decade. The airline aims to leverage Nairobi's geographic position and existing partnerships to grow its regional network and improve connectivity across East, Central, and Southern Africa.
