Kenya Airways Flight Grounded After Tire Failure at Cape Town Airport
A Kenya Airways Boeing 737-800 suffered tire failure during landing at Cape Town International Airport on Tuesday, forcing authorities to shut down the main runway.
The aircraft, flight KQ784 from Nairobi, experienced tire failure during the rollout phase. It came to rest on the runway, leaving controllers no option but to close it to arriving traffic while recovery teams worked to move the plane.
Airport teams worked alongside Kenya Airways and other stakeholders to recover the aircraft and clear it from the runway. The main runway was closed for several hours, causing delays and cancellations across dozens of flights.
The airport operator Airports Company South Africa confirmed that no injuries occurred during the incident. Domestic departures continued to operate throughout the disruption, while international departures were temporarily unable to operate due to the aircraft blocking the primary runway.
