Krishna vs Dimon: IBM CEO Defies Criticisms on Meetings and Device Use
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has broken ranks with JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon over the issue of device use in meetings. While Dimon has long criticized employees for checking emails and notifications during gatherings, saying it is 'disrespectful', Krishna takes a different view.
Krishna distinguishes between small meetings and large ones, suggesting that the size and purpose of a meeting should determine whether using a device is acceptable. In a 2025 interview with CNN, he explained that for very large meetings, it's not really about discussion but rather a 'communication vehicle' where people are informed.
However, Krishna expects employees to stay focused during smaller meetings. He would frown upon someone checking their phone and ask them to step away when they have time.
Dimon has repeatedly spoken out against device use in meetings, calling it 'disrespectful' and a waste of time. In his 2025 annual letter to shareholders, he urged employees to make meetings more productive by avoiding unnecessary ones and staying engaged during those that are held.
