Krispy Kreme Stock Struggles Amid Debt and Weak Unit Economics
Krispy Kreme (DNUT) has been struggling since its return to public markets in 2021. The company's shares have lost most of their value due to weak unit economics, slowing US growth, and a high debt load.
The failed partnership with McDonald's added to the problems, as Krispy Kreme's hub-and-spoke distribution network was costly to operate and many delivery locations did not generate sufficient returns.
However, there are some signs of improvement. Krispy Kreme's turnaround plan focuses on refranchising international markets, reducing debt, and concentrating investment on profitable opportunities.
The company reported a 38% increase in first-quarter adjusted EBITDA, free cash flow turned positive, and net leverage fell to 5.5x from 6.7x the previous quarter.
