Laffont's Nvidia Bet: A Warning Signal or Just Profit-Taking?

Instruments
NVDA
Share

Billionaire Philippe Laffont has been selling shares of Nvidia in nearly every quarter for over three years. His fund, Coatue Management, has reduced its stake in Nvidia by about 88% since March 31, 2023. In the last 13 quarters, Laffont's fund has sold Nvidia stock only once.

Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) have dominated in AI-accelerated data centers, but this may not be sustainable. Several of Nvidia's top customers are developing their own AI chips for their data centers, which could potentially reduce Nvidia's market share and pricing power.

Laffont's selling activity is likely more than just profit-taking. Since his fund's Nvidia stake peaked in the first quarter of 2023, shares have jumped tenfold. However, history shows that every game-changing technology has navigated an early stage bubble-bursting event, and AI may be no exception.
