Lake Ontario Renamed to Lake America in Google Maps
Google has begun updating its Maps service to reflect the federal government's renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America. The change only applies to users within the United States, where the lake will now be labeled as 'Lake America'. In contrast, Canadian users will still see the original name, 'Lake Ontario', while international users may see both names displayed.
The update is in line with Google's policy of reflecting official government sources for map designations. The company relies on the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) as its source for domestic geographic names data and updates maps accordingly. In this case, the GNIS has officially changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America within the United States.
The change only affects domestic users in the U.S., while Canadian and international users will see different labels or both names displayed. This aligns with Google's standard policy for bodies of water with varying names across countries.
