Lake Ontario Renamed to Lake America on Google and Apple Maps
President Donald Trump's executive order has led to a change in nomenclature on several digital maps, including Google and Apple Maps. The body of water previously known as Lake Ontario is now labeled as Lake America on these platforms.
The change follows the same logic used by both companies for bodies of water with multiple names across countries. This means that users outside the US will see the lake as Lake Ontario, but also be informed that it's also referred to as Lake America in some contexts.
Trump's order is part of a broader effort to rebrand geographical features with more 'American' names. In 2025, he signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and reverting the name of North America's tallest peak from Denali back to Mount McKinley.
Google stated that these updates are in line with their long-standing policy for bodies of water with varying names across countries. The company added that these changes were starting to roll out as of August 29, when they issued a news release confirming the update.
