Lake Ontario Renamed to Lake America on Google Maps Amid Trade Tensions
A recent update to Google Maps has renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America in the US. The change is due to an executive order from President Donald Trump, which appears to be a response to trade tariffs with Canada.
The name change only affects users viewing the map from within the US. Those outside the country will still see Lake Ontario's original name.
According to Google, it follows 'official government sources' when updating place names. The company claims that its policy is to reflect variations in names between countries.
New York State Governor Kathy Hochul has publicly stated that New York won't be referring to the lake as Lake America.
