Lake Ontario Renaming Sparks Chaos Among Navigation Platforms
President Donald Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America has left navigation platforms scrambling to make changes. The order, signed on August 27, instructs the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to formalize the change within 30 days.
Google Maps was one of the first to make the switch, changing the name from Lake Ontario to Lake America for users in the United States on August 29. However, users in Canada will continue to see 'Lake Ontario' on the platform, while those outside of the U.S. and Canada will see both names.
MapQuest, on the other hand, has taken a clear stance against changing the name, stating that it won't be updating its maps to reflect the new name. Instead, the company launched a map generator allowing users to create their own names for the lake.
