Lake Ontario Renaming Sparks Global Confusion Amidst US-Canada Trade Tensions
The Trump administration has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, marking the latest development in its trade war with Canada. The move is reminiscent of last year's attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America.
Google Maps has updated its naming convention to reflect the change, but only for US users. In other countries, including Canada and most of the world, the lake is still referred to as Lake Ontario.
The policy behind Google Maps' decision lies in using the names assigned by the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS). However, Apple Maps has so far stuck to the original name, leaving it unclear whether the company will eventually compromise and change its naming convention.
