Lake Ontario Renaming Sparks Navigation Platform Divide
President Donald Trump's executive order to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America has caused confusion among navigation platforms. The order, signed on August 27, instructs the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to formalize the change within 30 days.
Google Maps was one of the first to make the change, swapping the lake's name from Lake Ontario to Lake America for users in the United States as of August 29. The company explained that it updated its maps to reflect changes in official government sources.
However, not all navigation platforms have followed suit. MapQuest took a clear stance on the issue, stating 'We're not changing it' and launching a new map generator for users to create their own names for the lake.
