Laser Marking Technologies Gain Traction in Packaging Industry
Laser marking technologies are gaining traction in the packaging industry as companies like Mondi and Procter & Gamble (P&G) explore sustainable alternatives to traditional labels. The technology has been around for decades, but recent advancements in laser equipment have made it possible to mark directly onto packaging materials with high speed and image resolution.
Mondi unveiled a product concept that uses laser marking on the surface of flexible packaging, which reduces material usage and eliminates the need for conventional decorative printing. P&G partnered with LasX Industries to develop Lazrmark technology, a proprietary system that marks caps for its Tide laundry detergent with dosing marks and messaging.
LasX Vice President Ethan Dinauer explained that the primary changes in recent years have been with controls and software, allowing for quick file changes and no consumable materials. The company's systems can operate at speeds of 400 bottles per minute or more, depending on size and complexity of the artwork.
The technology is applicable to nearly all packaging substrates, including fiber, glass, and metals, but its use in the industry so far is dominated by polymer constructions. LasX has commercialized the solution as LaserSharp Marking and is experiencing rapid demand growth from the packaging sector.
