Latin America's E-commerce King vs Southeast Asia's Digital Giant
MercadoLibre and Sea Limited are two e-commerce companies that have made significant strides in their respective regions. MercadoLibre operates exclusively in Latin America, where it has turned challenges into competitive advantages by launching fintech businesses such as Mercado Pago and improving fulfillment options through Mercado Envios.
In the first half of 2026, MercadoLibre generated $19 billion in revenue, a 50% increase from the previous year. However, net income was down 13% due to lower margins and rising loan volumes.
Despite these challenges, analysts believe that MercadoLibre's competitive moves will help it gain market share in the long run. The company's P/E ratio of 53 may seem high, but Amazon has traded at higher ratios during its growth years.
Sea Limited, on the other hand, is a more complex business with a less cohesive structure. It started as an online gaming company and only later diversified into e-commerce. Despite this, it has been successful in Southeast Asia, with revenue increasing by 47% to $14.9 billion in the first half of 2026.
