Lawmakers Push for Refinery Worker Safety Rules Amid Industry Opposition
California lawmakers have proposed Senate Bill 966 to preserve refinery worker safety rules amidst industry opposition.
The bill, authored by State Sen. Lena Gonzalez, aims to enshrine existing worker protections into state law as California regulators revise them following a legal settlement with the oil lobby.
Chevron, Marathon Petroleum and PBF Energy have joined the Western States Petroleum Association in lobbying against the measure, arguing it would override a 2024 settlement that dropped years of litigation between the industry and regulators.
