Lawmakers Visit IBM Research Center Amid Quantum Computing Push
Rep. Mike Lawler (R, NY-17) and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick visited IBM's Thomas Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights to discuss emerging technologies like quantum computing. They toured the facility and met with IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna and IBM Research Director Jay Gambetta.
The discussion focused on U.S. technological competitiveness, domestic manufacturing, and the development of quantum computing. Lawler said the work being done at the research center demonstrates the importance of continued investment in research and a skilled technology workforce.
IBM is developing large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers and has been working on applications for the technology, including cybersecurity, health care, advanced manufacturing, scientific research, artificial intelligence, and national defense. Krishna said the government's commitment to advancing U.S. leadership in quantum computing is vital as the technology moves from scientific promise to practical reality.
