Lenovo's Lucky Escape: Avoiding US Scrutiny Amid China Fears
Lenovo has managed to avoid scrutiny from US officials despite its Chinese ownership, unlike other tech brands like Huawei. The company owns Motorola and ThinkPad, and acquired IBM's server business, but doesn't provide critical systems used by the federal government.
The ban on Huawei in 2018 was due to concerns over sabotage of US networks, while Lenovo has remained mostly out of the firing line. In 2016, an internal report expressed concern that Lenovo was planning to buy into US companies to gain access to homeland secrets and Defense Department-related information.
Despite warnings and directives, millions have been spent on Lenovo products by government agencies. For example, in 2022, $17 million was spent on 'Lenovo ThinkPad P50' for staff upgrades. The Biden administration has also purchased Lenovo equipment, as well as the previous Trump administration.
